List of State Universities In Nigeria

One would expect see only 36 State Universities in Nigeria , considering the fact that we have only 36 states (the FCT is not considered a state). However, I must tell you the we have more than 36 State-owned Universities because of the fact that some states have more than one Varsity established.

Ogun State for example, has the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) and the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED). The latter is the first State University in Nigeria that offers only programs in Education.

Many State Universities in Nigeria have relatively high school fees when you compared them with the Federal Government-owned ones. Many admission seekers do not like to choose them during JAMB UTME registration because of these facts and the fact that many are not well-managed. Many are also not widely respected.

I know of some students in their 200 and 300 Levels in some State Universities in Nigeria that have not see their first year results yet. They do not know if they have carry-overs or what their CGPAs are. This is really disturbing for a lot of students and it is one of the reasons many admission seekers like to steer away from these Varsities.

Next, we shall be publishing the list of Private Universities in Nigeria (only those that have been accredited by the NUC) and things you need to know about some of them.
